We Will Never Forget

August 2nd 1990 is a day etched in the minds of all Kuwaitis. We shall not forgot all who have fought for us and died for our liberation. May Allah protect Kuwait and allow it to prosper.

Lebanon in Pictures

I came back yesterday after a refreshing trip to Lebanon. Days went by as there was nothing to do but take pictures and listen to what old people have to say about life. Aside from that I think it was good that I went. I bought a professional camera mid May and ever since I love taking pictures of anything (and I mean anything). My time now is being fully utilized by taking pictures and now I have an excuse to go anywhere. I offer you my pick of the best photos I took in Lebanon. Bear in mind that I am still learning and haven’t yet found my style. Enjoy!

All the pictures were in Falougha and around our house.

Islam & Turkey

A friend of mine asked to publish this article as part of his project. It talks about Islam in Turkey and I hope you find it interesting.

Islam & Turkey

By: Abdulaziz Al K.

The Ottoman Empire:

After the Rashidun Caliphate, Umayyad Caliphate, the Caliphate in Hispania, Abbasid Caliphate and Fatimid Caliphate came the Ottoman Empire which lasted from 1299 to 1923. The empire was at the center of interactions between the Eastern and Western worlds for six centuries. The Ottoman Empire was an Islamic successor to the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. The new independent Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNA) was internationally recognized with the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923. The GNA officially declared the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. The Caliphate was constitutionally abolished several months later, on March 3, 1924.

This was the last era that Muslims were super powers, unlike now, where they are very weak and dependent on the West for security. In my opinion, the Ottoman Empire had both positive and negative effects on the Muslim (Arab) world. Under the Ottoman Empire the Arabs were in some way being colonized rather than being a part of the Ottomans. In the other hand, they were “stronger” then “now”, and also they were inventors and developers whereas now they are definitely only consumers.

Early Turkey:

When Ataturk became the first president of Turkey, one of the most influential decisions that he made that had a major effect on Turkey, was the separation of religion and the state. Trying to emulate the Europeans after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk had reforms that were designed to modernize the new Republic of Turkey into a democratic and secular nation-state. They were political, legal, cultural, social and economic reforms. The most influential to Islam in Turkey in my opinion were a) Abolition of the office of Caliphate held by the Ottoman Caliphate. b) The inclusion of the principle of laïcité in the constitution and The Islamic courts and Islamic canon law gave way to a secular law structure based on the Swiss Civil Code. These reforms have taken away the Islamic identity of the Turks and the Arabic culture.

Modern Turkey:

Nowadays, if you go to Turkey you can see the Islamic heritage everywhere but the culture can be varied in different cities. For example, Istanbul, despite being a historical place this city has various kinds of people. Some are religious people especially the ones who live outside the city, when I say religious it doesn’t mean Islamic extremists or fanatics but people who are committed to the rituals of Islam. Whereas others are very westernized and if you can see them it is highly unlikely to think that they come from an Islamic background.

Since Abdulla Gul became president of Turkey in 2007, Turkey has been involved or had a say on things that are happening in the Middle East. In my opinion, it some way it seems that Turkey is trying to get their Islamic identity back. The first time since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the foundation of the republic, the current power in Turkey is being led by a person who is an Islamist politician. Also, he criticized the political system that was designed by Ataturk. Hopefully one day the Turks will come to their senses and remove the process of secular Westernization and realize that this is in their best interest in the long run.

Going to Lebanon!

Yes I know I just came but yeah… I’m going to Lebanon! I usually don’t like going there but I am home alone in Kuwait and all my family are in Faloqa, Lebanon. Might as well escape the heat ha ? Seeing how this is my second time going to Lebanon, I don’t care about food because apparently their food is good, what should I do there?! Last time I went I was bored out of my mind. I am assuming this is going to be a family trip where I just follow my father wherever he goes and listen to what he has to say. But that is usually the first day :P . I would appreciate some feedback!

Street Fighter vs. Tekken Officially Announced

OMG I have been waiting for this since I was a kid! My dream has finally come true! I am really excited that they finally made this happen and hope to god it won’t be a failure like Mortal Kombat vs D.C. They even showed gameplay in Comic Con. It looks really good so far! The audience were epic haha.

OMG I WANT THIS NOW :@

This is the trailer to the release! Now only a release date is left.

Now that I am Here!

After 23 gruesome hours I finally reached Kuwait. After a long flight the first thing that comes to my mind is food. Food is semi-holy to me and I respect its existence mostly :P . That being said, I am craving something new in Kuwait. I go to the usual favorites every time I come but I would love to have something different. I am open to anything, and I mean anything. I think I spotted “Stone Grill” in Salmiya on Salem Al-Mubarek Street. Is it any good? Anyway I would love to hear suggestions and thoughts on more places! :D

Travel Playlist

Seeing how I am going to be on 2 long flights I might as well make a playlist. Some of these songs are fairly new and some are just random on the go.

1 ) Angus Dei – Morgan Page

2 ) One Day – Matisyahu

3 ) Miles Away (Morgan Page Remix) – Madonna

4 ) Some Chords – Deadmau5

5 ) Diamond Found Here – Tiesto vs. Axwell

6 ) The Right Life (Tiesto Remix) – Seal

7 ) Halfway Gone (Morgan Page Remix) – Lifehouse

8 ) Bulletproof (Tiborg Club Remix) – La Roux

9 ) Secrets – One Republic

10 ) Just My Imagination – Boyz II Men

This is in my opinion the best of the long playlist. At the same time I am too lazy to write it all lol. Tell me what you think!

Back to the Motherland!

I am on my way back to Kuwait! :D I am so happy that I am finally going back as I usually return in May and not in July. Hopefully this means more blogging seeing how bored I will be. Looking forward to it!
